After introducing you to via ferrata Hluboká, via ferrata Vodní brána and via ferrata Slánská hora we would like to show you via ferrata Bechyně. Brace yourself for a heart-pounding adventure along its breathtaking 500-meter length. Via ferrata Bechyně is not for the faint of heart, as it proudly boasts a “D/E” difficulty rating.
Via ferrata is a type of mountaineering activity that involves climbing along a fixed route using a system of metal cables, ladders, and other aids. The term “via ferrata” is Italian and translates to “iron path.”
Via ferratas are typically located in mountainous regions and provide a way for climbers with limited experience or technical skills to access challenging routes. The routes are equipped with steel cables that run along the path, periodically fixed to the rock face using bolts or other anchors. Climbers wear a harness and attach themselves to the cables using special via ferrata set, providing protection and preventing falls.
Along the via ferrata, climbers encounter various elements such as metal rungs (known as “stemples”), suspended bridges, ladder-like structures, and occasionally, vertical sections where climbers may need to use their own strength and climbing techniques.
Via ferratas allow climbers to experience the thrill and exposure of climbing in a safer and more controlled manner compared to traditional rock climbing. They offer a combination of hiking and climbing, providing an adventurous and scenic experience. However, it’s essential to have a knowledge of basic climbing techniques and the appropriate gear. You need a special safety harness, the so-called ferrata set, and helmet to be able to safely overcome the via ferrata. Sturdy shoes with a non-slip sole and protective gloves are recommended.

The via ferrata Bechyně begins with a descent towards the Lužnice River. This very unusual first section involves descending a short ladder and then using larger-than-usual metal rungs down. Only when you reach the bottom, near the water, does the real intense sport begin. The via ferrata is actually led entirely in a horizontal traverse just a few meters above the water. The via ferrata is not a through route. Therefore, it is necessary to return the same way along the via ferrata, which significantly increases its difficulty again.
