The Krkonoše are a mountain range located in the north of the Czech Republic and the south-west of Poland. The area of the Krkonoše amounts to 631 square kilometres. On both the Czech and Polish side, large parts of the mountain range are protected as national parks and nature reserves. The Czech Krkonoše National Park (Krkonošský národní park, KRNAP) was created in 1963 as the second national park in Czechoslovakia, making it the oldest national park in the Czech Republic.
Sněžka is a mountain on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland, the most prominent point of the Silesian Ridge in the Krkonoše mountains. Its summit is the highest point in the Czech Republic (1,603.3 metres).
